About Medrol

Overview

Medrol contains methylprednisolone, a type of steroid called a glucocorticoid. It comes as tablets taken by mouth. The medicine is readily absorbed through the digestive tract.

Safety information

Side effects

The label does not state which side effects are common or how often they occur. Reported effects include fluid retention, increased sweating, flushing, headache, dizziness, abdominal bloating, bruising, thin or fragile skin, delayed wound healing, muscle weakness and menstrual changes. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include: • Allergic reactions, including hives and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis. Seek emergency care for a severe allergic reaction. • High blood pressure, heart failure in susceptible people, and potassium loss. • Stomach or intestinal ulcers, which may bleed or perforate; inflammation of the pancreas; and ulcers in the food pipe. • Muscle loss, osteoporosis, fractures, tendon rupture, particularly of the Achilles tendon, and bone damage caused by loss of blood supply. • Seizures or increased pressure inside the skull, usually after treatment. • Cataracts, increased eye pressure, glaucoma or bulging eyes. • Reduced adrenal and pituitary gland function, particularly during illness, injury or surgery; Cushing-like changes; and slowed growth in children. • Increased blood sugar, previously hidden diabetes becoming apparent, or increased need for diabetes medicines. Liver enzyme levels may rise. The label describes these increases as usually small and reversible after treatment is discontinued. Medrol may also suppress skin-test reactions and increase protein breakdown.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for hives or another allergic reaction. - Seek immediate medical attention for a seizure. - Seek immediate medical attention for bleeding from the stomach or bowel.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Medrol if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection inside the body) or a known allergy to methylprednisolone or any other ingredient in the tablets.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines: - Cyclosporin: taking it with methylprednisolone may increase side effects from either medicine. Seizures have been reported with this combination. - Phenobarbital, phenytoin or rifampin: these may cause the body to clear methylprednisolone more quickly, reducing its effect. - Troleandomycin or ketoconazole: these may slow the removal of methylprednisolone from the body, increasing the risk of steroid toxicity. - Aspirin taken regularly at high doses: methylprednisolone may lower salicylate levels in the blood. Stopping methylprednisolone may then increase the risk of salicylate toxicity. Extra caution is needed if you have hypoprothrombinemia, a condition involving low levels of a blood-clotting protein. - Oral anticoagulants (blood thinners): methylprednisolone may increase or decrease their effect. Blood-clotting tests should be monitored.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
