About Keppra

Overview

Keppra (levetiracetam) is an antiepileptic medicine used to treat partial-onset seizures in patients aged 1 month and older. It is also used alongside other seizure medicines for myoclonic seizures in patients aged 12 years and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients aged 6 years and older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Exactly how it works is unknown, but its interaction with a protein involved in nerve-cell signaling may contribute to its antiseizure effect.

What it treats

- Partial-onset seizures in patients aged 1 month and older. - Myoclonic seizures in patients aged 12 years and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, as an add-on treatment. - Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients aged 6 years and older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, as an add-on treatment.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects in adults include sleepiness, weakness, infection and dizziness. In children, common side effects include tiredness, aggression, a blocked nose, reduced appetite and irritability. Contact a doctor promptly for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, unusual changes in mood or behaviour, or psychotic symptoms. Coordination problems, an abnormal walk or unsteadiness also need medical attention. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis and angioedema), serious skin reactions, and DRESS, a hypersensitivity reaction that can affect several organs. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction or any new rash. The label directs stopping Keppra at the first sign of a rash unless it is clearly unrelated to the medicine. Blood abnormalities and increased blood pressure have also been reported. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Keppra affects your alertness and coordination. Keppra must normally be withdrawn gradually because stopping it can cause withdrawal seizures; any withdrawal should be managed by your prescriber.

When to call your doctor

- Thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, or suicidal behavior. - New or worsening depression, aggression, irritability, or unusual changes in mood or behavior. - Any new skin rash, which may signal a serious skin reaction. - New trouble walking, unsteadiness, or loss of coordination.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Keppra if you have a known allergy to levetiracetam. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling), have occurred. Keppra requires monitoring for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, irritability, aggression, psychotic symptoms, or other unusual changes in mood or behaviour. It may cause sleepiness, fatigue and problems with balance, walking or coordination. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Serious skin reactions can occur. Keppra should be discontinued at the first sign of a rash unless the rash is clearly unrelated to the medicine. A severe allergic reaction called DRESS, which can affect several organs, also requires discontinuation if no other cause is found. Seek prompt medical advice if a rash develops. Keppra must be withdrawn gradually because of the risk of withdrawal seizures. Do not stop it abruptly without medical guidance. During pregnancy, levetiracetam blood levels may fall and need close monitoring. Animal studies suggest a potential risk of harm to the unborn baby.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
