WARNING - MALIGNANCY
Chronic immunosuppression with IMURAN, a purine antimetabolite increases
risk of malignancy in humans. Reports of malignancy include post-transplant lymphoma and hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Physicians using this drug should be very familiar with this risk as well as with the mutagenic potential to both men and women and with possible hematologic toxicities. Physicians should inform patients of the risk of malignancy with IMURAN. See WARNINGS.
About Imuran
Overview
Imuran contains azathioprine, an immunosuppressive medicine taken as a tablet. It is used alongside other treatment to help prevent rejection after a kidney transplant. It is also used to reduce the signs and symptoms of active rheumatoid arthritis. It works by suppressing the activity of the immune system.
What it treats
- Prevention of rejection after a kidney transplant, alongside other treatment. - Active rheumatoid arthritis, to reduce signs and symptoms.
Safety information
Side effects
A reduced white blood cell count is a common side effect of Imuran. Gastrointestinal side effects can also occur. Blood-related and gastrointestinal effects can be serious. Other serious risks include infections and cancer, including lymphoma. Contact your doctor if you develop an infection or experience gastrointestinal or blood-related problems. The frequency and severity of side effects depend on treatment duration, the amount prescribed, your underlying condition and other treatments you receive.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Imuran if you have had an allergic reaction to azathioprine. Do not use it to treat rheumatoid arthritis if you are pregnant. If you have rheumatoid arthritis and have previously received an alkylating medicine, such as cyclophosphamide, chlorambucil or melphalan, tell your prescriber. Treatment with Imuran may carry an unacceptably high risk of cancer in this situation.
Interactions
Imuran (azathioprine) can interact with the following medicines: - Allopurinol: can increase azathioprine-related toxicity. Your prescriber will need to reduce your Imuran dose. People with low or absent TPMT enzyme activity may need additional adjustments or alternative treatment. - Febuxostat: use with Imuran is not recommended because it can increase azathioprine-related toxicity. - Aminosalicylates, such as sulphasalazine, mesalazine and olsalazine: may inhibit the TPMT enzyme and should be used cautiously with Imuran. - Medicines that affect white blood cell production, including co-trimoxazole: may cause a greater fall in white blood cells, especially in kidney transplant recipients. - ACE inhibitors used for high blood pressure: anemia and severely reduced white blood cell counts have been reported with azathioprine. - Warfarin: Imuran may reduce its blood-thinning effect. - Ribavirin: severe reductions in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets have been reported. This combination requires frequent complete blood counts, including platelet counts. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.
Using Imuran
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
