About Ilaris

Overview

Ilaris (canakinumab) is a prescription medicine used to treat periodic fever syndromes, including cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS) in adults and children aged 4 years and older, and TRAPS, hyperimmunoglobulin D syndrome/mevalonate kinase deficiency (HIDS/MKD), and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in adults and children. It also treats active Still’s disease, including adult-onset Still’s disease and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, in patients aged 2 years and older. In adults, it treats gout flares when NSAIDs and colchicine cannot be used, are not tolerated or do not work well enough, and repeated courses of corticosteroids are not appropriate. It works by blocking interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), a protein that drives inflammation.

What it treats

- Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS), including familial cold auto-inflammatory syndrome (FCAS) and Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS), in adults and children aged 4 years and older. - Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) in adults and children. - Hyperimmunoglobulin D syndrome (HIDS)/mevalonate kinase deficiency (MKD) in adults and children. - Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in adults and children. - Active Still’s disease, including adult-onset Still’s disease and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, in patients aged 2 years and older. - Gout flares in adults when NSAIDs and colchicine cannot be used, are not tolerated or do not work adequately, and repeated courses of corticosteroids are not appropriate.

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated: • CAPS: nose and throat infections, diarrhea, flu, runny nose, nausea, headache, bronchitis, stomach and intestinal infections, sore throat, weight gain, muscle and joint pain, and a spinning sensation (vertigo). • TRAPS, HIDS/MKD and FMF: injection-site reactions and nose and throat infections. • Still’s disease: nose and throat or upper respiratory tract infections, abdominal pain and injection-site reactions. • Gout flares: nose and throat or upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, raised blood triglycerides and back pain. Serious risks include serious infections, suppression of the immune system, hypersensitivity reactions and macrophage activation syndrome. A serious drug reaction called DRESS (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) can also occur. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop an infection or suspect a serious reaction. ILARIS must be stopped if a serious infection or hypersensitivity reaction develops; hypersensitivity reactions require prompt treatment and monitoring until they resolve.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Ilaris if you have a confirmed allergy to canakinumab or any of its other ingredients. Ilaris should not be given during an active infection that requires medical treatment. Ilaris has been associated with an increased risk of serious infections. Tell your prescriber if you have an infection, a history of recurring infections, or a condition that makes you more likely to develop infections. Ilaris must be stopped if a serious infection develops. Allergic reactions, including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), can occur. If a reaction occurs, Ilaris must be stopped, prompt treatment is needed, and monitoring should continue until the reaction resolves. Avoid live vaccines during treatment. Recommended vaccinations should be updated before starting Ilaris.
