Before taking this medicine

FLEXBUMIN must not be used in people who have had an allergic reaction to albumin preparations, N-acetyltryptophan or sodium caprylate. It must also not be used in people with severe anemia, or heart failure when the volume of blood in circulation is normal or increased. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur. If a reaction is suspected, treatment must be stopped and appropriate medical care given. Caution and close monitoring are needed where fluid overload or excessive dilution of the blood may occur. Monitoring includes circulation, electrolyte balance, and signs of heart, breathing or kidney failure or increased pressure inside the skull. When large volumes are given, replacement of other blood components may be needed. Blood pressure should be monitored after trauma or surgery because disrupted clots may cause renewed bleeding. FLEXBUMIN must not be diluted with Sterile Water for Injection because this can destroy red blood cells. It is made from human plasma and may carry infectious agents, including viruses and, theoretically, the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
