About RhoGAM
Overview
RhoGAM contains human anti-D immunoglobulin and is used to prevent Rh immunization in Rh-negative people. It is used during pregnancy and after childbirth, pregnancy loss or ectopic pregnancy unless the father or baby is conclusively Rh-negative; after childbirth, it is given to the mother, not the newborn. It is also used after an Rh-negative person receives incompatible Rh-positive blood or blood products. It suppresses the immune response to Rh-positive red blood cells but cannot change Rh immunization once it has occurred.
What it treats
- Prevention of Rh immunization in Rh-negative women during pregnancy and after childbirth, unless the father or baby is conclusively Rh-negative. This includes delivery of an Rh-positive baby, suspected or confirmed passage of fetal blood into the mother’s circulation, actual or threatened pregnancy loss, and ectopic pregnancy. - Prevention of Rh immunization in Rh-negative people after an incompatible transfusion of Rh-positive blood or blood products. After childbirth, RhoGAM is given to the mother, not the newborn.
Safety information
Side effects
The most frequently reported side effects are swelling, firmness, redness, mild pain or warmth at the injection site. Skin rash, body aches and a slight rise in temperature may also occur. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and hemolytic reactions, in which red blood cells are destroyed. Seek immediate medical attention for a suspected severe allergic reaction, and contact a doctor promptly if a hemolytic reaction is suspected. RhoGAM should be given where trained staff and emergency treatment are available. People treated after an Rh-incompatible blood transfusion need monitoring for hemolytic reactions. Because RhoGAM is made from human blood, it may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
RhoGAM must not be used in Rh-positive individuals or anyone with a history of anaphylaxis or other severe reactions affecting the whole body after receiving human immune globulin products. Severe allergic reactions can occur. It should be given in a setting with trained staff, medicines and equipment available to treat severe allergic reactions and shock. Because RhoGAM is made from human blood, it may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses and the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), and theoretically the agent that causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Transferred antibodies may temporarily cause positive results in antibody blood tests. People treated after an Rh-incompatible blood transfusion need clinical and laboratory monitoring for signs of red blood cell breakdown.
Interactions
RhoGAM may reduce the effectiveness of live vaccines, such as measles, mumps and varicella (chickenpox). Tell your doctor if you have recently received a live vaccine or plan to have one. Live vaccines should generally be delayed until 12 weeks after the final immune globulin dose. RhoGAM may also reduce a live vaccine’s effectiveness if given within 14 days after vaccination. After childbirth, rubella or MMR vaccination should not be delayed because of RhoGAM in women who are not immune to rubella.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
