About Fasenra
Overview
Fasenra (benralizumab) is a monoclonal antibody medicine used as an add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It also treats eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) in adults and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) in adults and children aged 12 years and older when no non-blood-related secondary cause can be identified. It binds to a specific receptor on eosinophils, a type of white blood cell involved in inflammation, and reduces their numbers. Fasenra is not for relief of sudden asthma symptoms or severe acute asthma attacks.
What it treats
- Add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in adults and children aged 6 years and older. Not for relief of sudden airway tightening or a prolonged, severe asthma attack. - Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) in adults. - Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) in adults and children aged 12 years and older, when no secondary cause outside the blood or blood-forming system can be identified.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache and sore throat in people treated for asthma; headache in people treated for EGPA; and headache, allergic reactions and flu-like illness in people treated for HES. Allergic reactions have occurred after Fasenra, including anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), hives and rash. Stop Fasenra and seek immediate medical help if an allergic reaction occurs.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Fasenra if you have a known allergy to benralizumab or any of its other ingredients. Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling, hives and rash, have occurred after administration. Stop Fasenra if an allergic reaction occurs. Do not suddenly stop oral or other systemic corticosteroids, or inhaled corticosteroids, when starting Fasenra. Any reduction should be gradual and managed by your prescriber. Existing parasitic worm infections must be treated before starting Fasenra. If an infection develops during treatment and does not respond to treatment for the worms, Fasenra should be stopped until the infection resolves.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
