About Exforge

Overview

Exforge is a prescription medicine containing amlodipine and valsartan in one tablet. It is used to treat high blood pressure. The two ingredients work in different ways to relax blood vessels, helping blood flow more easily and lowering blood pressure.

What it treats

- High blood pressure (hypertension).

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include swelling of the ankles or feet, dizziness, headache and tiredness. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop severe dizziness or fainting, pass much less urine than usual, or have muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat. These may be signs of very low blood pressure, kidney problems or high potassium levels. Seek emergency medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or new or worsening chest pain. These can indicate a serious allergic reaction or a heart problem.

When to call your doctor

- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing. - Fainting or severe dizziness, which may signal very low blood pressure. - New or worsening chest pain. - Passing very little or no urine, which may signal a serious kidney problem.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Exforge if you are allergic to amlodipine, valsartan or any tablet ingredient. It must not be used during pregnancy because valsartan can seriously harm the unborn baby. If pregnancy occurs, stop taking it and contact your prescriber promptly. Do not combine Exforge with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Exforge should not be used in people with severe low blood pressure, shock, severe narrowing of the aortic valve, or severe liver disease involving impaired bile flow. Medical assessment is needed before use if you have kidney disease, narrowing of the arteries supplying the kidneys, liver problems, heart failure or a recent heart attack. Dehydration or salt depletion can increase the risk of a marked fall in blood pressure. Tell your prescriber about potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes and other medicines affecting blood pressure, kidney function or potassium levels. Blood pressure, kidney function and potassium may need monitoring.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, especially: • Other blood pressure medicines, including ACE inhibitors, other angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or aliskiren. Some combinations increase the risk of low blood pressure, high potassium or kidney problems. • Potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes or potassium-sparing diuretics, which can raise potassium levels. • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen. These may reduce Exforge’s blood pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of kidney problems. • Lithium, because valsartan may increase lithium levels and the risk of toxicity. • Certain antibiotics, antifungal medicines and HIV medicines, such as clarithromycin, itraconazole or ritonavir, which can increase amlodipine levels. • Rifampicin or St John’s wort, which may alter amlodipine levels and blood pressure control. • Simvastatin, because amlodipine can increase its levels and the risk of muscle injury. • Tacrolimus or ciclosporin, which may require closer blood-level monitoring. Check with your doctor before starting or stopping medicines or supplements while taking Exforge.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
