About Edarbyclor

Overview

Edarbyclor is a prescription tablet containing azilsartan medoxomil (as azilsartan kamedoxomil) and chlorthalidone. It treats high blood pressure and may be used when one medicine is not enough, or as initial treatment when more than one medicine is likely to be needed. Its two active ingredients act on different processes involved in regulating blood pressure to help lower it.

High blood pressure (hypertension), when one medicine alone does not provide adequate control or as initial treatment when more than one medicine is likely to be needed.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dizziness and fatigue. Serious risks include excessively low blood pressure, particularly in people with low fluid or salt levels; worsening kidney function or kidney failure, especially in people with narrowing of the arteries supplying the kidneys; low potassium; raised uric acid; and harm to an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you experience or are told you have any of these problems, or if you become pregnant. Your doctor may monitor your kidney function and blood electrolyte levels during treatment.

When to call your doctor

• Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Edarbyclor. It can cause injury or death to an unborn baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Edarbyclor if you cannot produce urine (anuria). If you have diabetes, do not take it with any medicine containing aliskiren. Edarbyclor can cause excessively low blood pressure if you are low in fluids or salt. These imbalances should be corrected before treatment begins. Narrowing of the arteries supplying the kidneys (renal artery stenosis) increases the risk of kidney failure. If you have impaired kidney function, your prescriber should monitor it and may consider stopping Edarbyclor if it worsens. Blood electrolyte levels should also be checked periodically. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or other medicines that act on the renin–angiotensin system. Edarbyclor can increase lithium levels in the blood and the risk of lithium toxicity. NSAIDs can increase the risk of kidney problems and reduce Edarbyclor’s blood-pressure-lowering effect. Combining Edarbyclor with another medicine that blocks the renin–angiotensin system can increase the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure and high potassium levels.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
