About Cozaar

Overview

Cozaar contains losartan potassium, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure in adults and children older than 6 years. It is also used to reduce stroke risk in people with high blood pressure and an enlarged left ventricle, although evidence indicates this benefit does not apply to Black patients. Cozaar also treats diabetic kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes, a history of high blood pressure, raised blood creatinine and protein in the urine. It works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and stimulates release of the hormone aldosterone.

What it treats

- High blood pressure in adults and children older than 6 years. - Reduction of stroke risk in people with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (thickening of the heart’s main pumping chamber). Evidence indicates this benefit does not apply to Black patients. - Diabetic kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes, a history of high blood pressure, elevated blood creatinine and protein in the urine.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dizziness, upper respiratory infections, nasal congestion and back pain. Low blood pressure can occur, particularly if your body is low on fluid or salt. Contact your doctor if you develop low blood pressure. Your doctor may also need to monitor your kidney function and potassium levels if you are at risk of problems with either.

When to call your doctor

- If you find out you are pregnant, stop taking Cozaar and contact your doctor immediately. It can cause serious harm or death to an unborn baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Cozaar if you are allergic to losartan or any other ingredient in the product. If you have diabetes, do not take Cozaar together with aliskiren. Fluid or salt depletion should be corrected before starting Cozaar because of the risk of low blood pressure. Kidney function and potassium levels should be monitored in patients at risk of problems. Liver impairment requires special prescribing consideration. Cozaar is not recommended for children under 6 years of age or for children with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 30 mL/min/1.73 m².

Interactions

Medicines or supplements that raise potassium levels can increase the risk of high blood potassium when taken with Cozaar. Lithium may build up to toxic levels. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of kidney problems and reduce Cozaar’s blood-pressure-lowering effect. Combining Cozaar with other medicines that block the renin-angiotensin system can increase the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure, fainting and high potassium. Rifampin and fluconazole can change the levels of losartan and its active breakdown product in the body. Tell your doctor if you take either medicine.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
