About Cosentyx

Overview

Cosentyx contains secukinumab, a monoclonal antibody medicine supplied in pre-filled pens and pre-filled syringes for injection under the skin. It treats moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who are candidates for whole-body treatment or light therapy, and moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It also treats active psoriatic arthritis from age 2, active ankylosing spondylitis from age 12, active enthesitis-related arthritis in children aged 4 years and older, and active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis in adults with objective signs of inflammation. Secukinumab works by blocking IL-17A, a protein involved in inflammation and immune responses, reducing the release of inflammatory signals.

What it treats

- Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who are candidates for systemic treatment or phototherapy. - Active psoriatic arthritis in adults and children aged 2 years and older. - Active ankylosing spondylitis in adults and children aged 12 years and older. - Active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis in adults with objective signs of inflammation. - Active enthesitis-related arthritis in children aged 4 years and older. - Moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa in adults and children aged 12 years and older.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include cold-like symptoms affecting the nose and throat, diarrhoea and upper respiratory tract infections. Serious side effects include serious infections, severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis), inflammatory bowel disease and severe eczema-like skin reactions. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop an infection, bowel symptoms or a severe skin reaction. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction. If a serious infection develops, Cosentyx must be stopped until the infection resolves. A serious allergic reaction requires immediate discontinuation and appropriate treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Cosentyx if you have previously had a serious allergic reaction to secukinumab or any of its other ingredients. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling), have been reported. If a serious allergic reaction occurs, stop treatment immediately and seek urgent medical care. Cosentyx requires caution in people with a chronic infection, a history of repeated infections, or inflammatory bowel disease. Serious infections have occurred; if one develops, treatment must be stopped until the infection resolves. You should be evaluated for tuberculosis (TB) before starting treatment. Severe eczema-like skin reactions have also been reported. Avoid live vaccines during treatment.

Interactions

Starting or stopping Cosentyx may affect how the body processes certain other medicines through enzymes called CYP450. This may change how well those medicines work or their risk of side effects. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take. Your doctor may need to monitor their effects or blood levels and adjust them if needed.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
