About Coreg

Overview

Coreg contains carvedilol, an alpha- and beta-blocker. It is used to treat mild to severe chronic heart failure and high blood pressure. It is also used in clinically stable patients whose left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, is not working properly after a heart attack. It works by blocking certain alpha and beta receptors involved in the body’s response to nerve signals.

What it treats

- Mild to severe chronic heart failure. - Reduced function of the heart’s left ventricle after a heart attack, in clinically stable patients. - High blood pressure (hypertension).

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dizziness, tiredness, weakness, low blood pressure, diarrhea, increased blood sugar, a slow heartbeat and weight gain. Contact your doctor if you develop a slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, worsening heart failure, fluid retention or breathing difficulty caused by narrowed airways (bronchospasm). If you have diabetes, Coreg may change your blood sugar levels and hide symptoms of low blood sugar. Monitor your blood sugar and contact your doctor about changes. Do not stop Coreg suddenly. Abruptly stopping treatment can worsen coronary artery disease.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for a very slow heartbeat, severe dizziness or marked weakness. - Seek medical attention immediately for new or worsening difficulty breathing. - Seek medical attention immediately for worsening fluid retention or weight gain with swelling.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Coreg (carvedilol) if you have: • Asthma or related conditions that cause the airways to tighten. • Second- or third-degree heart block, sick sinus syndrome, or a severely slow heartbeat, unless a permanent pacemaker is in place for the severely slow heartbeat. • Cardiogenic shock or worsening heart failure that requires intravenous medicines to strengthen the heart’s pumping action. • Severe liver impairment. • A history of a serious allergic reaction to carvedilol or any ingredient in this medicine, including anaphylaxis, angioedema or Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Coreg requires caution if you have a slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, worsening heart failure or fluid retention. Beta-blockers should generally be avoided in people with airway tightening associated with conditions such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema; if Coreg is considered necessary, it requires caution. If you have diabetes, Coreg may hide symptoms of low blood sugar and change blood sugar levels, so monitoring is needed. Do not stop Coreg suddenly, as this can acutely worsen coronary artery disease.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following with Coreg: - Medicines that inhibit the CYP2D6 enzyme, which may increase carvedilol levels, or rifampin, which may decrease them. - Blood pressure-lowering medicines such as reserpine, MAO inhibitors or clonidine, which may increase the risk of low blood pressure or a very slow heart rate. - Digoxin or cyclosporine, as their levels may increase. Digoxin and other digitalis medicines can also increase the risk of a slow heart rate when taken with Coreg. - Amiodarone, which may increase carvedilol levels and further slow the heart rate or electrical conduction through the heart. - Verapamil- or diltiazem-type calcium channel blockers, which may affect blood pressure or the heart’s electrical activity. - Insulin or oral diabetes medicines, as Coreg may increase their blood sugar-lowering effects.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
