About Catapres

Overview

Catapres is a prescription medicine containing clonidine. The tablets are used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Clonidine works by stimulating alpha receptors in the central nervous system to lower blood pressure.

What it treats

High blood pressure (hypertension), alone or with other medicines for high blood pressure.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation and sedation (feeling sleepy or less alert). Other reported effects include fatigue, headache, weakness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dry eyes and blurred vision. Contact a doctor if you develop a slow or irregular heartbeat, palpitations, fainting, swelling beneath the skin or hives. Other serious reported effects include heart failure, confusion, hallucinations, depression, liver inflammation, difficulty passing urine or inability to urinate, and severe bowel problems that can resemble a blockage. These less frequent effects have been reported during clonidine treatment, but clonidine was not established as the cause in many cases, particularly when other medicines were also being taken.

When to call your doctor

Seek medical attention immediately for: - Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. - A very slow or irregular heartbeat, or fainting. - Severe confusion or seeing or hearing things that are not there. - Severe abdominal pain with vomiting or inability to pass stool. - Inability to urinate.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Catapres if you have a known allergy to clonidine.

Interactions

Clonidine may increase the sedating effects of alcohol, barbiturates and other medicines that cause drowsiness. Tricyclic antidepressants may reduce its blood pressure-lowering effect. Antipsychotic medicines may cause or worsen dizziness, fatigue or a drop in blood pressure when standing. Tell your doctor if you take digitalis, calcium channel blockers or beta-blockers. These medicines can affect heart rate or the heart’s electrical signals, so heart rate monitoring is recommended when they are taken with clonidine. A severely slow heart rate requiring hospital care and a pacemaker has been reported with clonidine taken alongside diltiazem or verapamil.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
