About Briviact

Overview

Briviact is a prescription medicine containing brivaracetam, available as film-coated tablets. It is used to treat partial-onset seizures in patients aged 1 month and older. Its exact action is not fully understood, but it binds to a protein in the brain called SV2A, which may contribute to its effect against seizures.

Side effects

Common side effects of Briviact include sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting. Common side effects in children are similar to those in adults. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Briviact affects you. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop suicidal thoughts or behaviour, depression, anxiety, irritability, aggressive behaviour or psychotic symptoms. Seek immediate medical care for an allergic reaction involving breathing difficulty or swelling (angioedema). Briviact must be stopped and not restarted if an allergic reaction occurs. Serious skin reactions also require urgent medical attention; Briviact should be stopped unless another cause is established. Do not stop Briviact abruptly on your own. Withdrawal should be gradual under your prescriber’s guidance.

When to call your doctor

• Thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, or suicidal behavior. • Trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. • A severe skin rash or other serious skin reaction. • Seeing or hearing things that are not there, or new or worsening aggression, depression, anxiety or irritability.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Briviact if you are allergic to brivaracetam or any of its inactive ingredients. Allergic reactions can include narrowing of the airways or swelling. Seek immediate medical care if these occur; Briviact must be stopped and not restarted if a hypersensitivity reaction occurs. Caution is needed for suicidal thoughts or behaviour, sleepiness, fatigue, and changes in mood or behaviour, including irritability, depression, aggression, anxiety or psychotic symptoms. These symptoms should be monitored. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how Briviact affects you. Serious skin reactions require Briviact to be stopped unless another cause is established. Briviact may harm an unborn baby, based on animal data, so discuss its use during pregnancy with your prescriber. Do not stop Briviact abruptly; it should be withdrawn gradually under your prescriber’s guidance.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin or levetiracetam. Rifampin can lower brivaracetam levels. Briviact can increase exposure to a breakdown product of carbamazepine, which may affect how well you tolerate it. Phenytoin levels can also increase and should be monitored when taken with Briviact. Briviact showed no added therapeutic benefit when taken with levetiracetam.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
