FDA boxed warningTocolysis
Oral terbutaline sulfate has not been approved and should not be used for acute or maintenance tocolysis. In particular, terbutaline sulfate should not be used for maintenance tocolysis in the outpatient or home setting. Serious adverse reactions, including death, have been reported after administration of terbutaline sulfate to pregnant women. In the mother, these adverse reactions include increased heart rate, transient hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, cardiac arrhythmias, pulmonary edema and myocardial ischemia. Increased fetal heart rate and neonatal hypoglycemia may occur as a result of maternal administration.

Overview
Terbutaline sulfate is a bronchodilator, a medicine that helps open the airways. It is used to prevent and relieve airway narrowing in people aged 12 years and older with asthma, or with reversible airway narrowing associated with bronchitis or emphysema. It works by stimulating beta-adrenergic receptors to help open narrowed airways.
What it treats
- Prevention and relief of airway narrowing (bronchospasm) in people aged 12 years and older with asthma. - Reversible airway narrowing associated with bronchitis or emphysema in people aged 12 years and older.
Safety information
Side effects
The most commonly reported side effects in studies of terbutaline tablets were nervousness and trembling. Other reported effects included headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, anxiety and sweating. Less frequently reported effects included vomiting, tingling sensations and muscle cramps. Contact a doctor if you develop a pounding, fast or irregular heartbeat, hallucinations or a rash. Rare reports have included raised liver enzyme levels and hypersensitivity vasculitis, an allergic reaction that causes inflammation of blood vessels.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to sympathomimetic amines or any ingredient in the product. Oral terbutaline is not approved and must not be used to stop preterm labour or to keep it from restarting.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you use other sympathomimetic medicines, which stimulate the nervous system in a similar way to terbutaline. Using them together is not recommended because their combined effects may harm the heart and circulation. The label allows an inhaled bronchodilator of this type for sudden airway tightening in patients taking ongoing oral terbutaline treatment.
