About Benicar Plus

Overview

Benicar Plus is a prescription tablet containing olmesartan medoxomil and hydrochlorothiazide. It treats high blood pressure and may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines, but it is not intended as the first treatment. Olmesartan blocks a substance that narrows blood vessels, while hydrochlorothiazide helps the kidneys remove more salt and water.

What it treats

Used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Not indicated as the initial treatment for hypertension.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, raised uric acid levels in the blood, dizziness and upper respiratory infections. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include low blood pressure, especially in people with low fluid or salt levels; impaired kidney function; allergic reactions; fluid, electrolyte or metabolic imbalances; sudden short-sightedness and acute angle-closure glaucoma; systemic lupus erythematosus; and sprue-like enteropathy, an intestinal disorder. Your doctor may need to monitor kidney function and potassium levels.

When to call your doctor

• If you become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. This medicine must be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected because it can harm or cause death to the developing baby. • Seek immediate medical attention for sudden difficulty seeing distant objects; sudden nearsightedness and a serious form of glaucoma have been reported.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Benicar Plus if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, cannot produce urine (anuria), or have diabetes and are taking aliskiren. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medicine. Caution is needed if you have low fluid levels, as this can increase the risk of low blood pressure. Fluid depletion should be corrected before treatment. Kidney function and potassium may need monitoring in people at risk, and patients should be monitored for signs of fluid or electrolyte imbalance. Other warnings include acute angle-closure glaucoma and a bowel condition called sprue-like enteropathy. If this bowel condition occurs and no other cause is found, the prescriber should consider stopping the medicine.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, especially: • Medicines or supplements that raise potassium levels, as they may increase potassium in your blood. • Lithium, as the risk of lithium toxicity may increase. • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may reduce the medicine’s blood-pressure-lowering and diuretic effects and increase the risk of kidney problems. • Other medicines that act on the renin–angiotensin system, as combining them may increase the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure and high potassium. • Colesevelam, as the timing of these medicines may need to be separated. • Diabetes medicines, which may need adjustment by your doctor. • Cholestyramine or colestipol, which may reduce absorption of hydrochlorothiazide.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
