About Benicar

Overview

Benicar tablets contain olmesartan medoxomil, which is converted to olmesartan during absorption. It belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and treats high blood pressure in adults and children aged six years and older. It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II that narrows blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure.

Safety information

Side effects

Dizziness was the most common side effect in adults, reported in 3%. Serious problems that warrant contacting a doctor include low blood pressure, worsening kidney function, and an intestinal disorder called sprue-like enteropathy. Low blood pressure is a particular concern when starting treatment if your fluid or salt levels are low. People with existing kidney problems need monitoring for worsening kidney function. Contact your doctor promptly if you become pregnant. Exposure to Benicar during pregnancy must be avoided.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Benicar. It can cause injury or death to the unborn baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Benicar with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Avoid Benicar during pregnancy because of the risk to the unborn baby. Use in children under 1 year of age is not recommended. If breastfeeding, discuss with your prescriber whether to stop breastfeeding or stop Benicar. Caution is needed if you are dehydrated or have low salt levels, as low blood pressure may occur when treatment starts. If you have impaired kidney function, monitoring is needed for any worsening. A bowel condition called sprue-like enteropathy has been reported. If this develops and no other cause is found, your prescriber should consider another blood pressure medicine.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Medicines or supplements that raise potassium levels, as combining them with Benicar may increase potassium in your blood. - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which may increase the risk of kidney problems and reduce Benicar’s blood pressure-lowering effect. - Other medicines that also block the renin-angiotensin system, as combining them with Benicar increases the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure and high potassium. - Lithium, as Benicar may increase lithium levels in your blood and the risk of lithium toxicity. - Colesevelam hydrochloride, as the timing of these medicines may need to be separated. Ask your doctor how to take them together.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
