About Avapro
Overview
Avapro (irbesartan) is a prescription tablet in a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It treats high blood pressure and diabetic kidney disease in people with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, raised blood creatinine and protein in the urine. It works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure.

Side effects
In people with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, the most common side effects reported more often than with placebo were high blood potassium, dizziness, dizziness when standing up, and a drop in blood pressure when standing up. Contact your doctor if you experience dizziness or low blood pressure, or if tests show high potassium or worsening kidney function. Low blood pressure is a particular concern if you are low on fluids or salt. Kidney function and blood potassium should be monitored during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Avapro if you are allergic to irbesartan or any other ingredient in the medicine. Do not take it with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Fluid or salt depletion should be corrected before treatment because of the risk of low blood pressure. Kidney function and blood potassium levels should be monitored. If you are breastfeeding, discuss use with your prescriber because of the potential for harmful effects in the infant.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take lithium, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including COX-2 inhibitors, or other medicines that also block the renin-angiotensin system. With Avapro, lithium may cause lithium toxicity. NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors may increase the risk of kidney problems and reduce Avapro’s blood-pressure-lowering effect. Combining medicines that block the renin-angiotensin system increases the risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure and high potassium levels.

Storage
