About Artane
Overview
Artane is a prescription tablet containing trihexyphenidyl, an antispasmodic medicine. It is used as an add-on treatment for all forms of parkinsonism, including alongside levodopa. It is also used to control certain movement disorders caused by medicines that act on the central nervous system.
What it treats
- All forms of parkinsonism, as an add-on treatment, including alongside levodopa. - Drug-induced movement disorders (extrapyramidal disorders) caused by certain medicines that act on the central nervous system.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, mild nausea and nervousness. Other possible effects include constipation, drowsiness, weakness, vomiting and headache. Contact a doctor if you develop difficulty urinating or inability to urinate, a rapid heartbeat, increased pressure inside the eye, enlarged pupils, a skin rash, confusion, agitation, unusual behaviour, delusions or hallucinations. Angle-closure glaucoma has been reported with long-term treatment. Rarely reported serious effects include infection of a salivary gland linked to excessive dry mouth, enlargement of the colon and loss of normal bowel movement causing a blockage (paralytic ileus). These warrant medical attention.

Storage
