About Advair

Overview

Advair HFA is an inhaler containing fluticasone propionate, an inhaled corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator. It treats asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older whose asthma is not adequately controlled with a long-term control medicine or who need both types of treatment. Fluticasone reduces airway inflammation, while salmeterol relaxes the muscles around the airways to help them stay open. It is not for relieving sudden asthma symptoms.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infection or inflammation, throat irritation, hoarseness or voice changes, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Contact a doctor if you develop a fungal infection of the mouth or throat (thrush), signs of pneumonia or another infection, vision changes, or worsening breathing after inhalation. Sudden worsening of breathing requires urgent medical attention. Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after inhalation to help reduce the risk of thrush. Other serious risks include reduced adrenal gland function, excess corticosteroid effects, effects on the heart or nervous system, reduced bone mineral density, effects on growth in children, glaucoma and cataracts, low blood potassium and high blood sugar. Pneumonia risk is increased in people with COPD. Existing infections may worsen, and chickenpox or measles can be serious or fatal in susceptible people. Discuss these risks and any new symptoms with your doctor.

When to call your doctor

• Seek immediate medical attention if your asthma symptoms are rapidly getting worse. • Seek immediate medical attention if wheezing or difficulty breathing suddenly worsens after using Advair.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Advair HFA if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. It must not be used as the primary treatment for a severe asthma attack requiring intensive treatment, started when asthma is rapidly worsening, or used to treat sudden asthma symptoms. Do not use it with another medicine containing a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA), because of the risk of overdose. Tell your prescriber if you have tuberculosis or another infection, including herpes simplex affecting the eye; COPD, because of an increased risk of pneumonia; heart or central nervous system disorders; seizures; an overactive thyroid; diabetes or ketoacidosis; or liver impairment. Chickenpox or measles can be more serious or fatal in susceptible patients. Additional precautions include impaired adrenal function when switching from systemic corticosteroids, excess corticosteroid effects, reduced bone density, slowed growth in children, glaucoma and cataracts. Your prescriber may need to monitor these, as well as low blood potassium, high blood sugar or conditions involving raised eosinophils, a type of white blood cell. If breathing suddenly worsens immediately after inhalation, stop using Advair HFA and seek medical care for alternative treatment.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines before using Advair HFA: • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ritonavir or ketoconazole: use together is not recommended because they may increase steroid effects throughout the body and effects on the heart and blood vessels. • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants: use together requires extreme caution because they may increase salmeterol’s effects on blood vessels. • Beta-blockers: these may reduce the airway-opening effect of salmeterol and cause severe narrowing of the airways. • Non-potassium-sparing diuretics (“water pills”): use together may worsen low blood potassium or changes in the heart’s electrical activity.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not pierce or burn the device, even when it is empty. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
