About Zytiga
Overview
Zytiga contains abiraterone acetate, a medicine used with prednisone to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is used for cancer that is resistant to treatment to lower testosterone, or high-risk cancer that remains sensitive to such treatment. It works by blocking an enzyme needed to make androgens, including testosterone, which can support prostate cancer growth.
What it treats
Used in combination with prednisone to treat: - Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. - Metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include tiredness, joint pain, high blood pressure, nausea, swelling from fluid retention, low blood potassium, hot flushes, diarrhoea, vomiting, upper respiratory infections, cough and headache. Blood tests may also show anaemia, low levels of certain white blood cells, raised alkaline phosphatase, and increased cholesterol, triglycerides or blood sugar. Contact your doctor if you develop or are told you have serious problems such as low potassium, fluid retention, high blood pressure, heart-related problems, reduced adrenal gland function or liver injury. Liver injury can be severe or fatal. Blood pressure, potassium and fluid retention need monitoring at least monthly, and liver function needs regular monitoring. Severely low blood sugar has been reported in people with diabetes taking thiazolidinediones, including pioglitazone, or repaglinide. Blood sugar should be monitored in people with diabetes. Combining Zytiga and prednisone or prednisolone with radium Ra 223 dichloride increases the risk of fractures and death and is not recommended.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. Zytiga should not be taken with medicines that strongly increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4. It should also be avoided with medicines broken down by CYP2D6 that have only a small margin between an effective and a harmful dose. If these combinations cannot be avoided, your doctor may need to adjust treatment.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
