About Temodar
Overview
Temodar contains temozolomide, an alkylating medicine used to treat certain brain cancers in adults. It is used for newly diagnosed glioblastoma alongside radiotherapy and then as maintenance treatment. It is also used as an additional treatment for newly diagnosed anaplastic astrocytoma and for anaplastic astrocytoma that has not responded to treatment. In the body, temozolomide changes into an active compound thought to work mainly by damaging DNA, leading to cell death.
What it treats
- Newly diagnosed glioblastoma in adults, used with radiotherapy and then as maintenance treatment. - Newly diagnosed anaplastic astrocytoma in adults, as adjuvant treatment. - Refractory anaplastic astrocytoma in adults.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include hair loss, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, headache, constipation, loss of appetite and seizures. Serious side effects include reduced blood cell counts, severe or fatal liver damage, and Pneumocystis pneumonia, a lung infection. Contact your doctor if you experience seizures or develop any of these serious side effects. Blood cell changes and liver damage may need tests to detect them. Your doctor will monitor blood counts and liver function during treatment. Older adults and women have a higher risk of reduced blood cell counts. Myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow disorder, and additional cancers, including myeloid leukemia, have also been reported. Temodar can harm an unborn baby; contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Temodar if you have had a serious allergic reaction to temozolomide, any other ingredient in Temodar, or dacarbazine. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with Temodar. Temodar can reduce blood cell production. Blood counts need monitoring before each treatment cycle and during treatment. Older people and women have a higher risk of this effect. Severe and fatal liver injury has been reported, so liver tests are needed before, during and after treatment. Monitoring is also needed for low lymphocyte counts and Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), particularly if you are taking steroids. Bone marrow disorders, including myelodysplastic syndrome, and additional cancers, including myeloid leukemia, have been observed. Temodar can harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Men with a pregnant partner or a partner who could become pregnant should use condoms. Do not breastfeed during treatment.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
