About Zyloprim
Overview
Zyloprim contains allopurinol, a prescription medicine taken as tablets. It is used to manage gout in adults and raised uric acid levels caused by cancer treatment in adults and children with leukemia, lymphoma or solid tumors. It is also used for certain adults with recurring calcium oxalate kidney stones and high uric acid levels in their urine despite lifestyle changes, but is not recommended for high uric acid levels without symptoms. It works by blocking an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, reducing the amount of uric acid the body makes.
What it treats
- Gout with signs or symptoms in adults. - Raised uric acid levels caused by cancer therapy in adults and children with leukemia, lymphoma or solid tumors. - Recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones in adults whose urinary uric acid remains high despite lifestyle changes. Not recommended for high uric acid levels without symptoms.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include skin rash, nausea, diarrhea, increased liver enzyme levels on blood tests, and gout attacks, particularly when treatment begins. Skin rash is the most frequently reported side effect. Stop taking allopurinol and contact a doctor immediately at the first sign of a rash or other allergic reaction. Serious skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, can be fatal. Reported reactions also include blistering or peeling skin, hives, and swelling of the face or tongue. Other serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include kidney problems or kidney failure, liver injury, and bone marrow suppression, which can reduce blood cell counts. Unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or blood in the urine have also been reported. Drowsiness and dizziness can occur and may affect driving or using machinery.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Zyloprim (allopurinol) if you have ever had an allergic reaction to allopurinol or any ingredient in the tablets. Stop taking it at the first sign of a skin rash or other allergic reaction. Serious and sometimes fatal skin reactions have been reported. Kidney problems require caution because allopurinol may affect kidney function. Reversible liver damage and bone marrow suppression have also been reported. If signs or symptoms of liver damage develop, liver function should be checked. Gout flares may occur when treatment begins. Preventive treatment with colchicine or an anti-inflammatory medicine is recommended. Allopurinol may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so use caution when driving or operating machinery. Allopurinol may harm an unborn baby. Do not breastfeed while taking it.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take bendamustine, thiazide diuretics, ampicillin or amoxicillin, as these may increase the risk of serious skin reactions with allopurinol. Allopurinol should not be used with capecitabine. If you take mercaptopurine or azathioprine, your prescriber will need to reduce that medicine’s dose according to its prescribing information. If you receive pegloticase, allopurinol should be stopped and should not be started during treatment. Discuss this with your doctor rather than changing treatment yourself. Storage
