About Zoladex

Overview

Zoladex contains goserelin acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. It is used with flutamide for locally confined prostate cancer, and for palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer or advanced breast cancer in women before or around menopause. It is also used to manage endometriosis and to thin the uterine lining before endometrial ablation for abnormal uterine bleeding. It works by reducing the release of hormones called gonadotropins from the pituitary gland.

What it treats

- Prostate cancer confined to the prostate, in combination with flutamide. - Advanced prostate cancer, for palliative treatment. - Endometriosis. - Thinning the uterine lining before endometrial ablation for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. - Advanced breast cancer in women before or around menopause, for palliative treatment.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects in men include hot flashes, sexual dysfunction, reduced erections and urinary symptoms. In women, common side effects include hot flushes, headache, sweating, acne, mood changes, depression, reduced sex drive, vaginal inflammation, reduced breast size, oily skin and swelling of the arms or legs. Contact a doctor if cancer symptoms worsen, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. This temporary worsening, called tumor flare, can include blockage of urine flow from the kidneys or compression of the spinal cord. Other serious risks include high blood sugar and an increased risk of diabetes in men, increased blood calcium in people whose cancer has spread to the bones, allergic reactions, and injection-site or blood vessel injury. Contact a doctor if you experience these problems. Increased risks of heart attack, sudden cardiac death and stroke have been reported in men receiving this type of medicine. Treatment may also prolong the QT interval, a change in the heart’s electrical rhythm. Seek urgent medical help for suspected heart attack, stroke or a serious allergic reaction.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for new or worsening difficulty passing urine. - Seek immediate medical attention for worsening cancer symptoms, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. - Seek immediate medical attention for an allergic reaction. - Seek immediate medical attention for an injury at the injection site.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Zoladex if you are allergic to goserelin or if you are pregnant, unless it is being used to treat advanced breast cancer. Pregnancy must be ruled out before treatment for non-cancerous gynecological conditions, and women should avoid becoming pregnant during treatment. Conditions requiring caution and monitoring include: • Risk of blockage of the tubes carrying urine from the kidneys or compression of the spinal cord. Tumor symptoms may temporarily worsen during the first few weeks of treatment. • High blood sugar or diabetes risk. Raised blood sugar and an increased risk of diabetes have been reported in men receiving medicines of this type. • Cardiovascular disease or risk factors. Increased risks of heart attack, sudden cardiac death and stroke have been reported in men receiving medicines of this type. • Cancer that has spread to the bones, because high blood calcium has been reported. • Risk of QT interval prolongation, an electrical change that can affect heart rhythm. • Procedures involving widening the cervix for endometrial ablation, because increased cervical resistance may occur. Systemic allergic reactions and injection-site or blood vessel injuries have been reported. If you are breastfeeding, a decision is needed about whether to stop breastfeeding or stop the medicine, taking into account the importance of treatment to the mother. No information is available about use in children.

Interactions
