About Zmax
Overview
Zmax contains azithromycin (as azithromycin dihydrate), a macrolide antibiotic. It treats mild to moderate acute bacterial sinusitis in adults and community-acquired pneumonia in adults and children aged six months and older who are suitable for oral treatment. It should be used only for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. It works by interfering with the bacteria’s ability to make proteins.
What it treats
- Mild to moderate acute bacterial sinusitis in adults caused by susceptible bacteria. - Mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia in adults and children aged 6 months and older caused by susceptible bacteria, when oral treatment is appropriate.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea or loose stools, nausea, abdominal pain, headache and vomiting. Severe allergic reactions and serious skin reactions can occur and may be fatal. Stop taking Zmax and seek urgent medical help if an allergic or skin reaction occurs. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridium difficile infection. Zmax may worsen myasthenia gravis; contact a doctor if symptoms worsen. Gastrointestinal side effects occur more often in people with very severely reduced kidney function.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Zmax if you have a known allergy to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. Severe allergic and skin reactions, including fatal reactions, have been reported. Stop taking Zmax and seek urgent medical help if a reaction occurs. Diarrhea during treatment requires medical assessment because it may be associated with Clostridium difficile. Caution is needed in people with myasthenia gravis, which may worsen, and in those with severely reduced kidney function (GFR below 10 mL/min), who have a higher risk of gastrointestinal problems. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 6 months of age.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take warfarin. Taking it with Zmax may increase the time it takes your blood to clot. Your doctor should monitor your prothrombin time, a blood test that measures clotting time.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C, upright and tightly closed, away from direct light. Check the label for how long it may be used after opening. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
