About Zithromax
Overview
Zithromax contains azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat certain mild to moderate bacterial infections. These include bacterial sinus infections, bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated skin infections and certain genital infections in adults. It is also used for middle ear infections and community-acquired pneumonia in children aged 6 months and older, and throat or tonsil infections in adults and children aged 2 years and older. It works by blocking the production of proteins that susceptible bacteria need.
What it treats
Zithromax (azithromycin) is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: - Bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis in adults - Acute bacterial sinusitis in adults - Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections in adults - Urethritis and cervicitis in adults - Genital ulcer disease in men - Acute middle ear infections in children aged 6 months and older - Community-acquired pneumonia in adults and children aged 6 months and older - Pharyngitis and tonsillitis in adults and children aged 2 years and older It is not recommended for pneumonia when moderate to severe illness or risk factors make oral treatment inappropriate.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting. Serious side effects include severe allergic or skin reactions, liver damage, and changes in the heart’s electrical activity (QT prolongation) that can cause dangerous abnormal heart rhythms. These reactions can be fatal. Stop Zithromax and seek medical help immediately if an allergic or serious skin reaction occurs, or if signs or symptoms of liver inflammation develop. Contact a doctor promptly about heart rhythm problems, diarrhea that may be associated with Clostridioides difficile infection, or worsening muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis. Some observational studies have also found a possible increased short-term risk of death from cardiovascular causes in adults taking azithromycin compared with other antibiotics. Narrowing of the stomach outlet, called infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, has been reported in newborns treated with azithromycin during the first 42 days of life. Parents or caregivers should contact a doctor if vomiting or irritability with feeding occurs.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. Do not take it if previous azithromycin use caused cholestatic jaundice (jaundice related to reduced bile flow) or liver dysfunction. Tell your prescriber if you have a prolonged QT interval, a history of torsades de pointes, or other conditions that increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms, or if you take medicines that prolong the QT interval. Potentially fatal heart rhythm problems have been reported. Older adults may be more susceptible. Some observational studies have also suggested an increased short-term risk of cardiovascular death with azithromycin compared with certain other antibiotics; your prescriber should weigh this potential risk against the treatment benefits. Zithromax may worsen muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis. Serious, sometimes fatal, allergic reactions, skin reactions and liver injury have been reported. Stop taking it and seek medical attention if an allergic or serious skin reaction occurs, or if signs or symptoms of hepatitis develop. Contact your prescriber if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridioides difficile infection. Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take nelfinavir or warfarin. With nelfinavir, close monitoring is needed for azithromycin side effects, including abnormal liver enzyme levels and hearing problems. Azithromycin may increase blood clotting time when taken with warfarin, so your doctor should monitor your prothrombin time.
