About ZERBAXA
Overview
ZERBAXA contains ceftolozane and tazobactam and is supplied as a powder in a vial for intravenous administration. It treats complicated abdominal infections, together with metronidazole, and complicated urinary tract infections, including kidney infections. It also treats hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, including pneumonia associated with ventilator use. Ceftolozane is an antibiotic that acts against susceptible bacteria, while tazobactam blocks enzymes called beta-lactamases.
What it treats
- Complicated infections within the abdomen, used together with metronidazole. - Complicated urinary tract infections, including kidney infections (pyelonephritis). - Hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, including ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. For infections caused by susceptible bacteria in adults and children of at least 32 weeks gestational age.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults treated for complicated abdominal or urinary tract infections include nausea, diarrhea, headache and fever. In adults treated for hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia, common side effects include increased liver enzymes, reduced kidney function or kidney failure, and diarrhea. Common side effects in children include increased platelet counts, diarrhea, fever, low white blood cell counts, abdominal pain, vomiting, increased liver enzymes and anemia. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which require immediate medical attention. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridioides difficile. Reduced kidney function or kidney failure also warrants prompt medical attention.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use ZERBAXA if you have a known serious allergy to ceftolozane, tazobactam, piperacillin/tazobactam, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Tell your prescriber about any allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported with these medicines. If anaphylaxis occurs, ZERBAXA must be stopped and appropriate treatment started. Caution is needed in people with reduced or changing kidney function. Reduced effectiveness was observed in patients with moderately reduced kidney function in a trial for complicated infections within the abdomen. Kidney function should be checked at least daily when it is changing. Diarrhea during treatment needs assessment because ZERBAXA can be associated with Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea. Patients aged 65 years and older had more adverse reactions and, in a trial for complicated infections within the abdomen, lower cure rates.
