About Yondelis
Overview
Yondelis (trabectedin) is an alkylating medicine used to treat certain cancers in adults. It is used for liposarcoma or leiomyosarcoma that cannot be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body, after previous treatment with an anthracycline-containing regimen. It works by binding to DNA and changing its shape, disrupting processes involved in cell growth and leading to cell death.
What it treats
Liposarcoma or leiomyosarcoma in adults when the cancer cannot be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body, after prior treatment with an anthracycline-containing regimen.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Yondelis (trabectedin) include nausea, tiredness, vomiting, constipation, reduced appetite, diarrhea, swelling in the limbs, shortness of breath and headache. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis); severe infection associated with low levels of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell; muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis); liver damage; heart muscle problems (cardiomyopathy); leakage of fluid from small blood vessels (capillary leak syndrome); and tissue death if the medicine leaks outside the vein. Neutropenic sepsis and cardiomyopathy can be fatal. Blood tests may show seriously low white blood cell or platelet counts, anemia, raised liver enzymes or increased creatine phosphokinase, a marker of muscle injury. Monitoring during treatment is needed to check for these problems. Yondelis can harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is needed during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Yondelis if you have a known severe allergy to trabectedin, including anaphylaxis, or severe liver impairment. Yondelis can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infection associated with low neutrophil counts, muscle breakdown, liver damage, heart muscle problems, and capillary leak syndrome (fluid leaking from small blood vessels). Blood tests are needed to monitor neutrophils, muscle enzyme levels (CPK) and liver function. Treatment may need to be withheld, adjusted or stopped if these problems occur. Extra caution is needed if you have reduced heart pumping function, a history of cardiovascular disease, substantial previous exposure to anthracycline chemotherapy, or are aged 65 or older. Yondelis can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment. Do not breastfeed while receiving Yondelis.
Interactions
Avoid taking Yondelis with medicines that strongly inhibit or induce CYP3A. Ask your doctor to check your other medicines for these interactions.
