About Yervoy
Overview
Yervoy (ipilimumab) is a prescription antibody medicine given into a vein. It treats certain cases of melanoma and is used with other cancer medicines for selected cases of kidney cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal squamous cell cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. It works by blocking CTLA-4, a protein that limits immune T-cell activity, helping increase the immune response against cancer cells.
What it treats
- Melanoma that cannot be surgically removed or has spread, in adults and children aged 12 years and older, alone or with nivolumab. Also used after complete surgical removal of cutaneous melanoma, including removal of regional lymph nodes, in adults with lymph node involvement greater than 1 mm. - Advanced renal cell carcinoma in adults with intermediate- or poor-risk disease, as first-line treatment with nivolumab. - Colorectal cancer that cannot be surgically removed or has spread and tests positive for MSI-H or dMMR using an FDA-authorized test, in adults and children aged 12 years and older, with nivolumab. - Hepatocellular carcinoma that cannot be surgically removed or has spread, in adults, with nivolumab as first-line treatment or after previous treatment with sorafenib. - Metastatic non-small cell lung cancer without EGFR or ALK tumor abnormalities, as first-line treatment in adults with nivolumab when an FDA-authorized test shows PD-L1 expression of at least 1%. Also used for metastatic or recurrent disease without EGFR or ALK tumor abnormalities, as first-line treatment with nivolumab and platinum-doublet chemotherapy. - Malignant pleural mesothelioma that cannot be surgically removed, in adults, as first-line treatment with nivolumab. - Advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that cannot be surgically removed or has spread, in adults whose tumors express PD-L1 (≥1), as first-line treatment with nivolumab.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Yervoy (ipilimumab) used alone include tiredness, diarrhea, itching, rash, nausea and headache. When used with nivolumab, common side effects also include muscle and bone pain, fever, cough, reduced appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, upper respiratory tract infection, joint pain, an underactive thyroid, constipation, weight loss and dizziness. When used with nivolumab and platinum-based chemotherapy, common side effects include tiredness, muscle and bone pain, nausea, diarrhea, rash, reduced appetite, constipation and itching. Yervoy can cause severe or fatal reactions in which the immune system attacks healthy organs or tissues. These can affect any part of the body, including the bowel, liver, skin, hormone-producing glands, lungs and kidneys. They may occur during treatment or after treatment has stopped. Contact a doctor promptly about new or worsening symptoms. Blood tests are needed to check for some of these problems. Reactions during an infusion can also be severe or life-threatening. Tell the healthcare team immediately if you develop symptoms during an infusion. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who have a donor stem cell transplant before or after Yervoy treatment. Yervoy can also harm an unborn baby; effective contraception is needed, and you should contact your doctor if you become pregnant.

Before taking this medicine
The label lists no formal contraindications for Yervoy (ipilimumab), but it includes important warnings. Yervoy can cause severe or fatal immune-related reactions affecting any organ or tissue, including the bowel, liver, skin, hormone-producing glands, lungs and kidneys. These reactions can occur during treatment or after it has stopped. Monitoring includes checking for symptoms and blood tests for liver, kidney, adrenal and thyroid function before and during treatment. Severe reactions may require treatment to be withheld; life-threatening reactions generally require permanent discontinuation. Infusion reactions can occur. Mild or moderate reactions may require the infusion to be paused or slowed; severe or life-threatening reactions require treatment to be discontinued. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who receive an allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (a transplant using donor stem cells) before or after Yervoy treatment. Yervoy can harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is advised. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
