About Xyntha
Overview
Xyntha is a recombinant factor VIII medicine for adults and children with hemophilia A, an inherited lack of clotting factor VIII. It is used to treat and control bleeding episodes, manage bleeding around surgery, and help reduce how often bleeding occurs. It works by temporarily replacing the missing factor VIII needed for blood to clot. Xyntha is not indicated for von Willebrand disease.
What it treats
For adults and children with hemophilia A (congenital factor VIII deficiency): • Treatment and control of bleeding episodes • Management of bleeding around surgery • Routine prevention to reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes Not indicated for von Willebrand’s disease.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Xyntha include headache, joint pain, fever and cough. These occurred in at least 10% of previously treated adults and children. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are possible. Reactions may occur to the trace amounts of hamster protein in Xyntha. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, stop treatment and seek immediate medical help. Some patients develop antibodies called factor VIII inhibitors, which can reduce the treatment’s effectiveness. Contact your doctor if bleeding is not controlled. Your doctor may test for these inhibitors.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Xyntha if you have had a life-threatening immediate allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to Xyntha or any of its components, including hamster proteins. Severe allergic reactions can occur. Xyntha contains trace amounts of hamster protein, which may cause hypersensitivity. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, stop treatment and seek immediate medical care. Antibodies that reduce Xyntha’s effect, called factor VIII inhibitors, may develop. If expected factor VIII levels are not reached or bleeding is not controlled despite appropriate treatment, testing for these inhibitors is needed.

Dosing

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
