About Xofluza
Overview
Xofluza is a prescription antiviral medicine containing baloxavir marboxil. It treats acute, uncomplicated flu in people aged 5 years and older whose symptoms began within the past 48 hours, including those who are otherwise healthy or at high risk of flu-related complications. It is also used to help prevent flu in people aged 5 years and older after contact with someone who has flu. It works by blocking an influenza virus enzyme called PA endonuclease.
What it treats
- Acute, uncomplicated influenza (flu) in patients aged 5 years and older whose symptoms began no more than 48 hours ago, who are otherwise healthy or at high risk of flu-related complications. - Prevention of influenza in patients aged 5 years and older after contact with someone who has influenza.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects in adults and adolescents include diarrhea (3%), bronchitis (3%), nausea (2%), sinusitis (2%) and headache (1%). In children aged 5 to under 12 years, vomiting and diarrhea were each reported in 5%. Seek immediate medical help if an allergic reaction occurs or is suspected. Reported reactions include anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), angioedema (swelling), hives and erythema multiforme (a skin reaction). Serious bacterial infections can occur alongside flu or as a complication. Xofluza has not been shown to prevent these infections, which require medical assessment and appropriate treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Xofluza if you have a history of an allergic reaction to baloxavir marboxil or any of its ingredients. Serious allergic reactions have included anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin, hives and erythema multiforme, a type of skin rash. Seek medical help immediately if an allergic reaction occurs or is suspected. Xofluza is not indicated for children younger than 5 years because resistance to the medicine developed more often in this age group during clinical trials. Serious bacterial infections can start with flu-like symptoms, occur alongside flu or develop as a complication. Xofluza has not been shown to prevent these complications. A prescriber should assess and treat any suspected bacterial infection.
Interactions
Avoid taking Xofluza with dairy products, calcium-fortified drinks, or laxatives, antacids and oral supplements containing minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium or zinc. Tell your doctor if you use any of these products. Antiviral medicines may affect live attenuated influenza vaccines. Discuss any planned flu vaccination with your doctor.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
