About Xofigo
Overview
Xofigo contains radium-223 dichloride, a radioactive medicine given by injection into a vein. It treats prostate cancer that no longer responds to treatment that lowers testosterone, has spread to the bones and causes symptoms, with no known spread to internal organs. It acts like calcium and collects in areas of increased bone activity, where it releases radiation that damages nearby cancer cells.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Xofigo include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and swelling of the arms or legs. Common blood test abnormalities include low levels of red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells, including lymphocytes and neutrophils, and platelets. Xofigo can suppress bone marrow function, reducing blood cell production and potentially causing life-threatening complications. Contact your doctor if blood tests show low blood cell counts. Blood counts must be checked before treatment starts and before every dose. Combining Xofigo with abiraterone acetate plus prednisone or prednisolone increases the risk of fractures and death and is not recommended. Contact your doctor if you are taking these medicines. Xofigo can harm an unborn baby. Men with female partners who could become pregnant should use effective contraception.

Interactions
No formal drug interaction studies have been carried out with Xofigo. In subgroup analyses from a randomized clinical trial, using bisphosphonates or calcium channel blockers alongside Xofigo did not affect its safety or effectiveness.
