About Xifaxan

Overview

Xifaxan contains rifaximin, a rifamycin antibiotic supplied as tablets. It treats travelers’ diarrhea caused by noninvasive E. coli in adults and children aged 12 years and older, but should not be used for diarrhea with fever or blood in the stool, or diarrhea caused by other pathogens. In adults, it also treats irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) and reduces the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy returning. Rifaximin works by acting against bacteria that are susceptible to it.

What it treats

- Travelers’ diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli in adults and children aged 12 years and older. Not for diarrhea with fever or blood in the stool, or diarrhea caused by other pathogens. - Reducing the risk of recurrence of overt hepatic encephalopathy in adults. - Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated. For travelers’ diarrhea, headache is common. For hepatic encephalopathy, common side effects include swelling in the limbs, nausea, constipation, dizziness, tiredness, urinary tract infection, difficulty sleeping, anemia, itching and fluid buildup in the abdomen. For irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), common side effects include nausea and an increase in the liver enzyme ALT on blood tests. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea is a serious possible side effect. Contact a doctor if diarrhea develops after treatment, does not improve or gets worse during treatment. For travelers’ diarrhea, stop Xifaxan and contact a doctor if symptoms worsen or last more than 24–48 hours. Contact a doctor if diarrhea is accompanied by fever or blood in the stool; Xifaxan was not effective in these cases.

When to call your doctor

• Diarrhea with fever or blood in your stool. • Diarrhea that gets worse during treatment or lasts more than 24–48 hours. • Diarrhea that occurs after treatment has ended.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Xifaxan if you are allergic to rifaximin, other rifamycin antibiotics or any ingredient in Xifaxan. Reported allergic reactions include severe skin peeling, swelling beneath the skin and anaphylaxis. Use with caution if you have severe liver impairment or take a P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitor, such as cyclosporine. Xifaxan may harm an unborn baby; tell your prescriber if you are pregnant. Xifaxan was not effective for travelers’ diarrhea accompanied by fever or blood in the stool, or caused by organisms other than E. coli. If diarrhea worsens or lasts more than 24–48 hours, stop Xifaxan and contact your prescriber about alternative treatment. Diarrhea that develops after treatment, or fails to improve or worsens during treatment, needs assessment for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take warfarin. Your INR and prothrombin time will need monitoring, and your doctor may need to adjust your warfarin dose to keep your INR within the target range.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
