About Xenical
Overview
Xenical (orlistat) is a prescription medicine used with a reduced-calorie diet to help with weight loss, weight maintenance and reducing the risk of regaining lost weight. It is indicated for people with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or abnormal blood fat levels. It works in the stomach and small intestine by blocking enzymes that break down dietary fat, so some of that fat is not absorbed.
What it treats
- Obesity management, including weight loss and weight maintenance, alongside a reduced-calorie diet. - Reducing the risk of regaining weight after previous weight loss. For patients with an initial BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher, or 27 kg/m² or higher with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes or abnormal blood fat levels.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include oily spotting, gas with discharge, an urgent need to pass stool, fatty or oily stools, passing oil from the bowel, more frequent bowel movements and loss of bowel control. Bowel-related side effects may increase with a high-fat diet. Serious problems include rare reports of severe liver injury, including sudden liver failure, and kidney stones or kidney damage caused by oxalate. Substantial weight loss can also increase the risk of gallstones. Contact your doctor if you suspect any of these problems. People at risk of reduced kidney function need monitoring, and Xenical must be stopped if oxalate-related kidney damage develops. Xenical can also reduce vitamin absorption. The label recommends a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to help maintain adequate nutrition.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Xenical if you are pregnant, have chronic malabsorption syndrome (a long-term problem absorbing nutrients), have cholestasis (reduced or blocked bile flow), or are allergic to orlistat or any ingredient in Xenical. Use caution if you are breastfeeding. Xenical can interact with other medicines and reduce vitamin absorption. The label advises taking a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins. Kidney stones and kidney damage caused by oxalate may occur. People at risk of reduced kidney function need kidney monitoring; Xenical must be stopped if oxalate-related kidney damage develops. Rare cases of severe liver injury, including acute liver failure, have been reported. Substantial weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones. A high-fat diet can increase digestive side effects. Medical causes of obesity, such as an underactive thyroid, should be ruled out before prescribing Xenical.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Cyclosporine: Xenical can lower cyclosporine levels in the blood. - Levothyroxine: Your thyroid function should be monitored when these medicines are used together. - Warfarin: Blood-clotting tests should be monitored closely. - Amiodarone: Xenical can reduce the amount of amiodarone your body is exposed to. - Anti-seizure medicines: Seizures have been reported with combined use. Your doctor should monitor for changes in how often seizures occur or how severe they are. - Antiretroviral medicines for HIV: Loss of HIV control has been reported. HIV RNA levels should be checked frequently. The label recommends that everyone taking Xenical take a multivitamin containing vitamins A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. Discuss this supplement with your doctor.

Storage
