About Vonvendi
Overview
Vonvendi contains recombinant von Willebrand factor, a protein involved in blood clotting. It is used in adults and children with von Willebrand disease to treat and control bleeding episodes and manage bleeding around surgery. In adults only, it is also used for preventive treatment to reduce how often bleeding episodes occur. It helps platelets stick to damaged blood vessels and to each other, and protects another clotting protein, factor VIII, from being broken down too quickly.
What it treats
- Treatment and control of bleeding episodes in adults and children with von Willebrand disease. - Management of bleeding around surgery in adults and children with von Willebrand disease. - Routine prevention to reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adults with von Willebrand disease.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness and itching all over the body. Serious risks include blood clots and allergic or infusion-related reactions, including anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that requires emergency treatment. Contact a doctor promptly if a serious reaction is suspected. People with known risk factors for blood clots are at higher risk. Sustained high factor VIII levels can also increase this risk when Vonvendi is used frequently with recombinant factor VIII. Antibodies may develop against von Willebrand factor or factor VIII and reduce treatment effectiveness. Contact your doctor if bleeding is not controlled; testing for these antibodies may be needed.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Vonvendi if you have had a life-threatening allergic reaction to it or any of its components, including tri-sodium citrate-dihydrate, glycine, mannitol, trehalose-dihydrate, polysorbate 80, or hamster or mouse proteins. Blood clots have occurred with Vonvendi. People with known risk factors for blood clots need particular caution and monitoring. If Vonvendi is used frequently with recombinant factor VIII, factor VIII levels should be monitored because persistently excessive levels can increase the risk of blood clots. Allergic and infusion-related reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur. Stop Vonvendi if allergic symptoms develop and seek emergency medical treatment. Antibodies that block von Willebrand factor or factor VIII may develop. Testing is needed if expected von Willebrand factor activity levels are not reached or bleeding is not controlled despite appropriate treatment.

Storage
