About VISTASEAL
Overview
VISTASEAL is a fibrin sealant containing human fibrinogen and human thrombin, supplied in syringes. It is used during surgery to help control mild to moderate bleeding when standard methods, such as stitches or cautery, are ineffective or impractical. When mixed and applied to the wound, its two components form a fibrin clot that helps stop bleeding.
What it treats
- Helps control mild to moderate bleeding during surgery when standard surgical methods, such as sutures, tying off blood vessels or cautery, are ineffective or impractical. It is also effective in patients receiving heparin.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include pain related to the procedure and nausea, each reported in more than 1% of patients. Contact a doctor immediately if you experience an allergic reaction. Serious blood clots may occur if VISTASEAL is administered into a blood vessel. VISTASEAL may also carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses, the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and, theoretically, the agent that causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
Before taking this medicine
VISTASEAL must not be used in people with a history of anaphylaxis or severe whole-body allergic reactions to human blood products. It must not be injected directly into the bloodstream because this may cause blood clots. It must not be used to treat severe or brisk arterial bleeding, as the blood flow can wash it away and prevent it from stopping the bleeding. It must not be sprayed unless the minimum recommended distance between the applicator tip and the bleeding site can be maintained. Allergic reactions can occur. VISTASEAL may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses and the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). A risk of transmitting the agent that causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is theoretical.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
