About Viibryd
Overview
Viibryd is a prescription medicine containing vilazodone. It is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. How it works is not fully understood, but it is thought to increase serotonin activity in the brain by reducing its reuptake.

Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and difficulty sleeping. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include suicidal thoughts or behaviors in adolescents and young adults, serotonin syndrome, increased bleeding, mania or hypomania, seizures, angle-closure glaucoma and low blood sodium. Sexual dysfunction and symptoms after stopping treatment are also reported and should be discussed with a doctor. Serotonin syndrome can occur when vilazodone is taken alone, and the risk increases with other medicines that affect serotonin. Bleeding risk may increase when taken with aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), other antiplatelet medicines or anticoagulants such as warfarin.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Viibryd (vilazodone) if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or have stopped one within the past 14 days. This includes linezolid and intravenous methylene blue. Combining these medicines increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Viibryd should be avoided in people with untreated anatomically narrow eye angles because of the risk of angle-closure glaucoma. Screening for bipolar disorder is needed before treatment because mania or hypomania may occur. Use requires caution in people with a seizure disorder. Serotonin syndrome can occur with Viibryd alone, and the risk increases with other serotonergic medicines, including SSRIs, SNRIs, triptans and amphetamines. Aspirin, NSAIDs, other antiplatelet medicines, warfarin and other anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with Viibryd. Sexual dysfunction may also occur. Use during the third trimester of pregnancy may increase the risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension and withdrawal symptoms in the newborn.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take medicines that strongly block or increase the activity of CYP3A4, an enzyme involved in drug processing. These medicines can affect the dose of Viibryd you need. Your prescriber may need to adjust your dose; do not change it yourself.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
