Before taking this medicine

Do not take Vfend if you are allergic to voriconazole or any of its ingredients. Vfend tablets contain lactose and should not be taken by people with hereditary galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. It is not known whether allergy to other azole antifungals also means you will be allergic to Vfend. Vfend must not be taken with eplerenone, ergot alkaloids such as ergotamine or dihydroergotamine, finerenone, ivabradine, lurasidone, naloxegol, pimozide, quinidine, rifabutin, sirolimus, tolvaptan, voclosporin, carbamazepine, long-acting barbiturates, rifampin or St. John’s wort. It must not be used with venetoclax when treatment is being started or increased in people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma, because of an increased risk of tumor lysis syndrome. Certain doses of efavirenz and high-dose ritonavir are also contraindicated. Low-dose ritonavir should generally be avoided unless the prescriber determines that the benefits justify the risks. These are not all possible interactions; your prescriber must review your other medicines and herbal products. Vfend requires particular caution in people with conditions that increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms. Low potassium, magnesium or calcium must be corrected before treatment. Serious liver reactions can occur, so liver function tests are needed before and during treatment. Vision should be monitored if treatment lasts longer than 28 days. Avoid sunlight because Vfend can cause photosensitivity. Severe peeling skin reactions and certain bone problems associated with long-term treatment require discontinuation. People using corticosteroids by any route need careful monitoring for adrenal dysfunction during and after Vfend treatment. Seek immediate medical care for signs or symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome or adrenal insufficiency. Voriconazole can harm an unborn baby. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant; people who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children younger than 2 years.
