About Vermox

Overview

Vermox chewable tablets contain mebendazole, a medicine used to treat worm infections. They are used in adults and children aged one year and older for intestinal infections caused by roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura). Mebendazole works by acting against these parasitic worms in the gut.

What it treats

- Gastrointestinal roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) infections in patients aged one year and older. - Gastrointestinal whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) infections in patients aged one year and older.

Safety information

Side effects

Side effects reported in clinical trials include loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting and rash. Serious effects reported include seizures in infants younger than 1 year and low levels of certain white blood cells, including neutropenia and agranulocytosis, in patients receiving higher doses for prolonged periods. Blood counts should be monitored in these patients. Severe skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, have been reported when mebendazole is taken with metronidazole. Avoid using these medicines together. Seek urgent medical attention for a seizure or a severe skin reaction, and contact your doctor if low white blood cell counts are identified.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for a seizure (convulsion), especially in a baby under 1 year old. - Seek medical attention immediately for a severe skin rash, particularly if mebendazole is being taken with metronidazole.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Vermox if you are allergic to mebendazole or any of its other ingredients. Seizures have been reported in infants younger than 1 year. Low white blood cell counts, including neutropenia and agranulocytosis, have been reported with higher doses and prolonged treatment; blood counts should be monitored in these patients. Avoid taking Vermox with metronidazole. Serious skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, have been reported when these medicines are used together.

Interactions

Avoid taking mebendazole with metronidazole. Tell your doctor if you are taking metronidazole before starting Vermox.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
