About Biltricide
Overview
Biltricide is a prescription tablet medicine containing praziquantel, an antiparasitic medicine. It treats schistosomiasis and the liver fluke infections clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis in adults and children aged 1 year and older. It works by killing the parasitic worms responsible for these infections.
What it treats
For patients aged 1 year and older: - Schistosomiasis caused by any Schistosoma species. - Clonorchiasis caused by the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis. - Opisthorchiasis caused by the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects of Biltricide include feeling unwell, headache, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, nausea, fever and hives. These reactions may be more frequent or more serious in people with a heavy worm burden. Children have experienced side effects similar to those in adults. The frequency of reported reactions cannot always be reliably estimated. Other reported effects include vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, weakness, muscle pain, itching, rash, sleepiness, ringing in the ears and a spinning sensation. Seek urgent medical attention for serious reactions such as a severe allergic reaction, difficulty breathing or wheezing, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, or a severe skin reaction such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome. Contact a doctor promptly for bloody diarrhoea, visual disturbances, tremor or difficulty walking. Liver and lung inflammation have also been reported. Treatment during the acute phase of schistosomiasis can cause potentially life-threatening worsening of the illness. Biltricide may also worsen effects of schistosomiasis on the brain and nervous system.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Biltricide if you are allergic to praziquantel or any of its other ingredients, have cysticercosis in the eye (a parasitic infection), or take a strong CYP3A enzyme inducer such as rifampin. Treating cysticercosis in the eye with Biltricide may cause irreversible eye damage. Tell your prescriber if you have: • Acute schistosomiasis: treatment may cause potentially life-threatening worsening of the illness and may not be effective during this phase. • Epilepsy or signs of possible brain or spinal cord involvement, including lumps under the skin that may suggest cysticercosis. Biltricide can worsen central nervous system problems caused by schistosomiasis. • An abnormal heart rhythm: monitoring is needed during treatment because heart rhythm disturbances have been observed. • Schistosomiasis affecting the liver and spleen together with moderate to severe liver impairment: monitoring for adverse reactions is needed. Safety has not been established in children younger than 1 year.
Interactions
Avoid taking Biltricide with medicines that moderately increase the activity of the CYP3A enzyme, such as efavirenz. Tell your doctor if you take efavirenz.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
