About Venofer
Overview
Venofer (iron sucrose) is an iron replacement medicine given into a vein. It is used to treat iron deficiency anemia in people with chronic kidney disease. It supplies iron that the body uses to make hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
What it treats
Iron deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Side effects
Common side effects in adults include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, low blood pressure, itching, pain in the arms or legs, joint or back pain, muscle cramps, injection-site reactions, chest pain, and swelling of the hands or feet. Common side effects reported in children include headache, viral respiratory infections, inflammation of the lining of the abdomen (peritonitis), vomiting, fever, dizziness, cough, nausea, blood clots in an arteriovenous fistula, and low or high blood pressure. Serious risks include severe allergic reactions, low blood pressure and iron overload. Contact a doctor immediately if you suspect a serious reaction. Healthcare staff must monitor for allergic reactions during treatment and for at least 30 minutes afterwards, and until you are clinically stable. Blood pressure monitoring is required during and after each administration. Regular blood tests are needed to monitor the response to treatment and help prevent iron overload. Venofer must not be given to patients with iron overload.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Venofer must not be given to anyone with a known allergy to Venofer or with iron overload. Serious allergic reactions can occur. It should only be given where staff and treatments for these reactions are immediately available. Patients must be monitored during administration and for at least 30 minutes afterwards, and until clinically stable. Venofer may cause low blood pressure, so monitoring is required during and after each administration. Blood responses to treatment must be checked regularly to help prevent iron overload.
Interactions
Venofer may reduce the absorption of iron taken by mouth. Tell your doctor if you take oral iron medicines or supplements.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
