About Vemlidy
Overview
Vemlidy is an antiviral tablet containing tenofovir alafenamide, which the body converts to tenofovir. It treats chronic hepatitis B in adults and children aged 6 years and older who weigh at least 25 kg and have compensated liver disease, meaning the liver still functions adequately. It works by blocking a viral enzyme involved in hepatitis B virus replication.

Safety information
Side effects
Headache is the most common side effect, reported in at least 10% of patients. Serious side effects include severe worsening of hepatitis B, new or worsening kidney problems, lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the blood), and severe liver enlargement with fat buildup. Contact your doctor if you develop symptoms or have test results suggesting any of these problems. Kidney function should be checked before or when starting treatment and monitored during treatment. If you also have HIV-1, Vemlidy alone is not recommended to treat it, as HIV-1 resistance may develop.

Before taking this medicine
The FDA label lists no contraindications for Vemlidy. Caution is needed in people who have both hepatitis B and HIV-1. Vemlidy alone is not recommended to treat HIV-1, as HIV-1 resistance may develop. New or worsening kidney problems may occur. Kidney function, urine glucose and urine protein should be checked before or when treatment starts and monitored during treatment. People with chronic kidney disease also need blood phosphorus checks. Treatment should be stopped if symptoms or laboratory findings suggest lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the blood) or significant liver toxicity, including severe liver enlargement with fat buildup.
Interactions
Vemlidy absorption may change when taken with medicines that strongly affect the transport proteins P-glycoprotein (P-gp) or BCRP. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to check for potential interactions before and during treatment.
