About Veklury
Overview
Veklury contains remdesivir, an antiviral medicine given by intravenous infusion. It treats COVID-19 in adults and children from birth who weigh at least 1.5 kg, either when hospitalized or when not hospitalized but with mild-to-moderate illness and a high risk of severe COVID-19. It works by blocking an enzyme the virus that causes COVID-19 uses to copy its genetic material.
What it treats
COVID-19 in adults and children from birth who weigh at least 1.5 kg and are either hospitalized or have mild-to-moderate COVID-19 outside hospital with a high risk of progression to severe illness, including hospitalization or death.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Veklury include nausea and increases in liver enzymes called ALT and AST, which are detected through blood tests. Serious reactions include allergic reactions, including severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), during or after the infusion. Tell your healthcare team immediately if you experience a suspected allergic reaction. Increased liver enzymes may occur with liver inflammation. Your healthcare team will check liver blood tests before treatment and during treatment as appropriate. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop signs or symptoms of liver inflammation. Treatment may need to be stopped if liver enzymes rise significantly and must be stopped if an ALT increase occurs with signs or symptoms of liver inflammation.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Veklury (remdesivir) must not be used in anyone who has had a clinically significant allergic reaction to Veklury or any of its ingredients. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur during or after infusion. Patients should be monitored during infusion and observed for at least one hour afterwards, as clinically appropriate. If a clinically significant allergic reaction occurs, administration must be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment started. Veklury can increase liver enzyme levels. Liver blood tests are needed before treatment and during treatment as clinically appropriate. Clinicians should consider stopping treatment if ALT rises above 10 times the upper limit of normal. Treatment must be stopped if raised ALT is accompanied by signs or symptoms of liver inflammation. Use with chloroquine phosphate or hydroxychloroquine sulfate is not recommended because these medicines may reduce Veklury’s antiviral activity.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
