About Vabysmo

Overview

Vabysmo contains faricimab, an antibody medicine supplied as a solution for injection into the eye in a single-dose vial. It is used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and macular edema following retinal vein occlusion. It works by blocking VEGF-A and Ang-2, proteins involved in new blood vessel growth, leakage and blood vessel stability.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects reported with Vabysmo were cataract (15%) and bleeding on the surface of the eye, called conjunctival hemorrhage (8%). Serious side effects include allergic reactions, infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal detachment, increased pressure inside the eye, inflammation or blockage of retinal blood vessels, and a potential risk of blood clots in arteries. Increased eye pressure has been seen within 60 minutes of an injection. Contact your doctor without delay if you develop symptoms that could suggest an infection inside the eye or retinal detachment. Seek medical attention for any suspected serious side effect.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an infection inside the eye or a detached retina (the light-sensitive layer pulling away from the back of the eye).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Vabysmo must not be used if you have an infection in or around the eye, active inflammation inside the eye, or hypersensitivity (allergy) to the medicine. Serious infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis) and retinal detachment may occur after an injection into the eye. Report any symptoms suggesting either condition without delay so they can be assessed and treated promptly. Pressure inside the eye may rise within 60 minutes of an injection. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries associated with VEGF inhibition.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
