Before taking this medicine

Do not take Urocit-K if you have high blood potassium or a condition that increases this risk, including chronic kidney failure, uncontrolled diabetes, acute dehydration, adrenal insufficiency or extensive tissue breakdown. Strenuous exercise when you are not physically conditioned also increases this risk. Do not take it with potassium-sparing medicines such as triamterene, spironolactone or amiloride. Urocit-K must not be used if you have: • Reduced kidney function with a glomerular filtration rate below 0.7 mL/kg/min. • A condition that slows or blocks tablet passage through the digestive tract, such as delayed stomach emptying, compression of the food pipe, or narrowing or blockage of the intestine. This restriction also applies if you take anticholinergic medicines. • Peptic ulcer disease. • An active urinary tract infection. Avoid Urocit-K if you have a condition that limits potassium removal from the body, such as severe heart muscle damage or heart failure. Dangerously high potassium can develop rapidly without symptoms and may cause cardiac arrest. Periodic blood tests and ECGs are needed to monitor for this risk. Stop taking Urocit-K immediately and seek medical attention if you develop severe vomiting, abdominal pain or gastrointestinal bleeding. These symptoms require investigation for a blockage or a hole in the bowel. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, Urocit-K should be used only if clearly needed. Its effects on an unborn baby, reproductive capacity and the potassium content of breast milk are unknown. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
