About Renvela
Overview
Renvela contains sevelamer carbonate, a phosphate-binding medicine. It is used to control phosphorus levels in the blood in adults and children aged 6 years and older with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It works by binding phosphate in the digestive tract, reducing the amount absorbed into the blood.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, gas and constipation. Contact a doctor promptly for difficulty swallowing or serious bowel problems. Sevelamer use has been associated with bowel blockage, bleeding ulcers in the digestive tract, inflammation of the colon, tissue death and perforation (a hole in the digestive tract). Some cases have required hospitalization and surgery.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Renvela if you have a bowel obstruction or a known allergy to sevelamer carbonate, sevelamer hydrochloride or any of its other ingredients. Serious swallowing difficulties and bowel problems have been reported with sevelamer use. These include bowel obstruction, bleeding ulcers in the digestive tract, inflammation of the colon, tissue death and holes in the digestive tract. Some cases have required hospital treatment and surgery.
Interactions
Renvela can affect the absorption of some medicines taken by mouth, which may affect how safely or effectively they work. Tell your doctor if you take ciprofloxacin or mycophenolate mofetil; these must be taken separately from Renvela. Ask your doctor how to space them. Cyclosporine, tacrolimus and levothyroxine may also need to be taken at a different time. Your doctor may monitor medicine levels in your blood or how well your treatment is working. Sevelamer did not alter the absorption or handling of digoxin, enalapril, iron, metoprolol or warfarin in interaction studies. Evidence on interactions with most other oral medicines is limited, so review all medicines and supplements you take with your doctor.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
