About Unasyn
Overview
Unasyn is a prescription antibacterial medicine containing ampicillin sodium and sulbactam sodium, supplied as a powder in a vial for injection. It treats certain infections of the skin and underlying tissues, inside the abdomen, and in the female reproductive tract caused by susceptible bacteria. Ampicillin acts against susceptible bacteria, while sulbactam blocks bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases that can interfere with ampicillin’s action.
What it treats
- Skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible bacteria. - Infections within the abdomen caused by susceptible bacteria. - Gynecological infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Unasyn if you have had a serious allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis or Stevens–Johnson syndrome, to ampicillin, sulbactam or other beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins. Do not use Unasyn if it has previously caused cholestatic jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes due to reduced bile flow) or liver problems.
Interactions
Probenecid may increase the blood levels of ampicillin and sulbactam and keep them elevated for longer. Taking allopurinol with ampicillin increases the risk of rash. This combination has not been studied specifically with Unasyn. Unasyn and aminoglycoside antibiotics should not be mixed together during preparation, because the ampicillin in Unasyn can inactivate the aminoglycoside. Tell your doctor if you are receiving any of these medicines.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
