About Treanda
Overview
Treanda contains bendamustine hydrochloride, an alkylating cancer medicine given into a vein. It is used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), although its effectiveness compared with first-line treatments other than chlorambucil has not been established. It also treats slow-growing B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has progressed during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen. It forms links between DNA strands that can lead to cell death, although its exact mechanism of action is not fully known.
What it treats
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Its effectiveness compared with first-line treatments other than chlorambucil has not been established. - Indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that has progressed during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include low red blood cell counts (anemia), low white blood cell counts and low platelet counts, nausea, vomiting and fever. In people treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, common side effects also include tiredness, diarrhea, constipation, reduced appetite, cough, headache, weight loss, shortness of breath, rash and inflammation of the mouth. Nausea and tiredness can occur during the infusion or within 24 hours afterward. Contact a doctor promptly for fever or other signs of infection, new or worsening changes in movement, thinking or behavior, or skin reactions. Serious risks include bone marrow suppression, infections or reactivation of infections, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a serious brain condition. Severe allergic or infusion reactions and severe skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome, DRESS and toxic epidermal necrolysis, can occur. Some skin reactions have been fatal. Seek immediate medical attention for a severe allergic reaction or severe skin reaction. Other serious risks include tumor lysis syndrome, caused by the breakdown of cancer cells, which can lead to sudden kidney failure and death; liver injury; and tissue injury if the infusion leaks outside the vein. Tell the healthcare team about any problems at the infusion site during or after treatment. Precancerous conditions and other cancers have also been reported. Treanda can harm an unborn baby.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Treanda if you have a known allergy to bendamustine or have previously had an allergic reaction to it, including anaphylaxis. It must not be used in people with creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min, or with certain liver test abnormalities: total bilirubin 1.5–3 times the upper limit of normal together with AST or ALT 2.5–10 times that limit, or total bilirubin above 3 times that limit. Treanda requires monitoring for low blood cell counts, infection or reactivation of infections, and liver injury. New or worsening neurological, thinking or behavioural symptoms need assessment for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Severe allergic or infusion reactions and severe skin reactions, some fatal, have occurred. Tumour lysis syndrome can cause acute kidney failure and death. Precancerous conditions and other cancers have also been reported. The infusion site needs monitoring because leakage outside the vein can cause injury. Treanda can harm an unborn baby. Females who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Treanda may impair fertility.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. During Treanda treatment, your doctor may consider alternatives to medicines that increase or block the activity of an enzyme called CYP1A2.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
