About Tradjenta
Overview
Tradjenta tablets contain linagliptin, a medicine called a DPP-4 inhibitor. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by helping hormones stay active longer, supporting insulin release when blood sugar is normal or high and reducing the amount of sugar released by the liver. Tradjenta is not recommended for type 1 diabetes because it would not be effective.
What it treats
Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, alongside diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control.
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effect is inflammation of the nose and throat (nasopharyngitis). Serious side effects and warnings that warrant prompt medical attention include: • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), including fatal cases. Tradjenta should be stopped promptly if pancreatitis is suspected. • Low blood sugar when used with insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release. • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling under the skin (angioedema), and skin peeling. Stop Tradjenta and seek immediate medical attention if a serious allergic reaction occurs. • Severe and disabling joint pain. Contact your doctor if this develops. • A blistering skin condition called bullous pemphigoid, which may require hospital treatment. Report blisters or open sores to your doctor promptly. Tradjenta should be stopped if this condition is suspected. • Heart failure is a warning because it has been observed with two other medicines in the same class. Your doctor should assess your risk and monitor for signs and symptoms.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Tradjenta if you are allergic to linagliptin or any of its other ingredients. Serious allergic reactions have occurred, including anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin, peeling skin reactions, hives and airway reactions. Conditions requiring caution include: • Pancreatitis: Acute pancreatitis, including fatal cases, has been reported. Stop Tradjenta promptly if pancreatitis is suspected. • Low blood sugar: The risk is increased when Tradjenta is used with insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release. Your prescriber may need to adjust these medicines. • Serious allergic reactions: Stop Tradjenta and seek prompt medical care if a reaction occurs. • Severe joint pain: Severe and disabling joint pain has been reported. Your prescriber may consider stopping Tradjenta if it is the suspected cause. • Blistering skin disease: Bullous pemphigoid requiring hospital care has been reported. Report blisters or open skin sores promptly. Stop Tradjenta if this condition is suspected. • Heart failure risk: Heart failure has been observed with two other medicines in the same drug class. If you have known risk factors for heart failure, your prescriber should weigh the risks and benefits and monitor for signs and symptoms.
Interactions
Strong inducers of P-glycoprotein or CYP3A4, such as rifampin, may make Tradjenta less effective. Tell your doctor if you take rifampin or another medicine in this group. The label strongly recommends an alternative treatment when these medicines are used together.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
