About Soliqua Pen
Overview
Soliqua Pen is a prescription medicine combining insulin glargine and lixisenatide. It is used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Insulin glargine provides long-acting insulin, while lixisenatide helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high and slows the passage of food through the stomach.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, alongside diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache and injection-site reactions such as redness, itching or swelling. Low blood sugar may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, confusion or a fast heartbeat. Serious side effects require prompt medical attention: • Severe low blood sugar can cause seizures or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency help. • Severe allergic reactions may cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or fainting. Seek emergency help. • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) may cause severe, persistent abdominal pain, sometimes spreading to the back, with or without vomiting. Stop using this medicine and seek urgent medical advice. • Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration and kidney problems. Contact a doctor promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or are passing less urine. • Low blood potassium may cause muscle weakness, cramps or an irregular heartbeat. Seek urgent medical advice.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Soliqua if you are allergic to insulin glargine, lixisenatide or any other ingredient in the medicine. Do not use it during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). It is not intended to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Soliqua is not recommended for people with severe gastroparesis (markedly delayed stomach emptying) or end-stage kidney disease. Tell your prescriber if you have a history of pancreatitis, kidney or liver problems, frequent low blood sugar, difficulty recognising low blood sugar, or low potassium levels. Vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration and worsen kidney problems. Using Soliqua with pioglitazone or similar medicines can increase the risk of fluid retention and heart failure. Pregnancy, plans to become pregnant, or breastfeeding require a treatment review with your prescriber.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you take. Important interactions include: • Other diabetes medicines, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, can increase the risk of low blood sugar. • Beta blockers and some other blood pressure medicines can make the warning signs of low blood sugar harder to recognise. • Corticosteroids, some diuretics and thyroid hormones can affect blood sugar control. • Pioglitazone and similar diabetes medicines can increase the risk of fluid retention and heart failure when used with insulin. • Alcohol can increase or reduce insulin’s blood-sugar-lowering effect, making blood sugar less predictable. Lixisenatide slows stomach emptying and may delay the absorption of medicines taken by mouth. This is particularly important for oral contraceptives, antibiotics and medicines that need close monitoring. Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether any oral medicines need to be taken at a different time.

Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
